People Power Promotes Parade

Reading Pride has been advised today that the planned protests by the National Front will no longer be taking place.

Whilst we agree with Freedom of Expression for all members of Reading's diverse community, we understandably had concerns with regards to the racist and homophobic views and opinions shared by the National Front's members. We have always planned for a colourful but safe parade through the town centre to the festival site and recent events have demonstrated why there is still a need for Pride Festivals up and down the Country. There is still a war against discrimination and visibility is the most powerful weapon available.

At this stage, Reading pride is not aware of the National Front's decision not to protest but we are certain that the recent public opinion which has been highly publicised has been one of the driving forces behind it.

It is apparent that our festival is no longer considered Reading Pride - It's Reading's Pride – and today, we are not only proud to be gay, but we are also proud to be Reading Citizens.

We look forward to celebrating diversity with all of you on the parade and/or the festival grounds tomorrow.
